Accredited Activities

Guidelines for assessment 

You do not have to include assessment questions with any CPD event you run, however if you do choose to have assessment you must include a copy of all assessment questions in the initial accreditation application. Applications that do not have this information will be accredited as non-assessed activities. Note assessment is optional for delegates who attend the course and those who do not complete assessment or don't achieve the 70% pass rate should be allocated reduced CPD points. It is easier to provide an accredited activity without assessment.

CPD logos  

All activities that are accredited should be advertised with the appropriate Optometry Board of Australia CPD logo. The logo makes it easy for optometrists to identify courses that have been accredited and the number of points allocated to the course.

  • Guidelines for the use of the logo are provided in the manual.
  • Copies of the logo will be given to providers of accredited courses.
  • Logos should not be used to advertise other courses or courses thay have not yet been accredited*.

*Training providers that do so may find that future courses may not be accredited.

My activity ran overtime  

Activities are accredited based on the application that is received by Eye on CPD prior to the activity. If an activity runs overtime points will not be amended retrospectively. Training providers that deliver activities that run undertime may find future accreditation of courses withheld.

CPD points recording/attendance information 

All CPD providers must submit attendance via upload in the Provider Portal or sent to Eye on CPD within 14 days of an activity being delivered. Optometry Australia membership numbers should be collected from optometrists who attend who are members of the Optometry Australia and non-members should provide a CPD number. You should advise optometrists that you will be submitting attendance information on their behalf to Optometry Australia. If a participant is not an Optometry Australia member they should be directed to email to request a CPD number. 

I left an optometrist's name off the attendance list 

If you are aware that you have forgotten to include someone's name on an attendance list, please email the attendance list template with the missing optometrist's name and Member/CPD number to Eye on CPD. If a member finds a discrepancy in their CPD records, they will be directed to you. The onus is on the Optometry Australia member and you to advise attendance correctly. Changes to a CPD attendance record will not occur without evidence from you.

Advertising of CPD activities to optometrists 

All courses accredited are advertised online in the CPD Calendar.
Non-accredited activities are not advertised. Advertisement space can be purchased for our site.


Why consider having your education sessions accredited?

When you become an educational provider for optometrists, you can be recognised for the quality education and training you provide for optometrists to help them meet their continuing professional development (CPD) requirements. If you have training courses you would like to present you can:

  • Accredit your one-off course or activity; or
  • Deliver your course without accreditation (known as non-accredited)


We provide accreditation of optometry education courses that meet the requirements developed by the Optometry Board of Australia as required under the National Health Practitioner National Law Act.

There are a number of benefits of seeking course accreditation:

  • You can deliver training activities both online and face-to-face
  • You can use the CPD logo in promoting your educational activities
  • You can provide certainty to attendees that their attendance will be recorded and can be used to meet their professional development requirements
  • We promote your training activities as accredited high quality educational activities
  • Optometrists have been known to more likely attend an accredited activity due to Optometry Australia recording all of their attendance in the one location, their Optometry Australia Member Hub

Delivering a non-accredited course means additional record-keeping requirements for optometrists and their attendance may not be suitable in meeting their professional development needs. This can impact on attendance.

Why is there now a fee to have CPD accredited?

Prior to the introduction of national registration in 2010, Optometry Australia maintained a CPD accreditation and recording program for all optometrists.  Once this component became mandatory in 2010 as part of national registration under AHPRA, Optometry Australia was asked by the Optometry Board of Australia (OBA) to continue this important function at no cost to stakeholders. After activities being submitted for accreditation more than doubled in the period following national registration, the ‘no-cost to CPD providers’ accreditation model became unsustainable for Optometry Australia.

The OBA subsequently launched an open tender process, whereby a number of applicants submitted  proposals based on cost recovery models to accredit CPD activities on behalf of the OBA.  With significant experience in the area and existing IT infrastructure in place, Optometry Australia was able to submit a very competitive proposal and was awarded the tender in late 2014 (to be administered by a newly created business unit, Eye on CPD).

Fees charged under this cost recovery model are used to fund Eye on CPD’s administrative and operational tasks and for a new IT platform which provides up to date points information (separated into the points categories specified by the OBA).  The accreditation fee also contributes to an independent external auditor to review activities nation-wide once they have been conducted (in order to ensure that they meet the high educational standard set by the Board) along with an independent assessment panel which acts as a secondary reviewer and arbiter in the handling of any complaints throughout the accreditation process.

Training provider responsibilities

All training providers and any persons appointed by the training provider to design or deliver accredited optometry education must agree to adhere to the following principles at all times:

1. Training providers must act at all times in such a manner as to support the requirements of the Eye on CPD scheme and all accredited optometry education must be delivered in accordance with the criteria specified in the Optometry Board of Australia continuing professional development (CPD) registration standard and guidelines. Providers must:

  • inform course attendees that the educational activity has been a) accredited by the CPD Program; b) the number and type of CPD points allocated for participation

  • accurately record the name, address and Member/CPD number of all participants

  • verify attendance and participation in any assessment and accurately track successful completion by all participants

  • provide a mechanism for seeking feedback from course attendees participants on the quality of the educational activity

  • inform participants that CPD points will only be tracked if they are registered with the Eye on CPD (this automatically includes optometrists who are members of Optometry Australia).

  • email the provided attendance form template back to Eye on CPD within 2 weeks of the completion of the learning activity being completed which includes the event ID #, session ID #, surname, first name and CPD tracking number

  • maintain detailed records of accredited CPD delivered including content, course outlines, feedback from course participants and attendance information.

2. Providers must ensure that accredited optometry education is of satisfactory quality, meets minimum accreditation standards and is fit for the purpose specified. The activity must enable participants to achieve the learning outcomes and competencies specified.

3. Promotional techniques must be ethical and transparent. Any course advertising must be in accordance with the Optometry Board continuing professional development guideline requirements.

4. Any claims made by the provider and its employees must be honest and truthful, and not give rise to false expectations. Information, claims and comparisons must be accurate, balanced, fair, objective and unambiguous. They must not mislead either directly or by implication.

5. Information privacy is maintained with respect to the delivery of accredited optometry education must be respected. Such information must not be disclosed or used for purposes other than that which it relates (delivery of accredited optometry education), except where such disclosure is required by law.

6. Training providers must aim to design and deliver accredited optometry education which meets the standards expected of modern education and training practice.

8. Training providers must operate a system for capturing feedback on the quality of education content (as compared to venue, facilities et cetera) and for receiving and responding to inquiries from optometrists who are intending to or have participated.

9. Educational courses which exclusively present the features, benefits and research relating to one particular brand or product will be accredited accordingly and designated as “manufacturer/supplier” delivered courses. Optometrists are not restricted in attending such courses however are restricted in how many such courses can be used to meet their annual professional development requirements.

10. Accredited activities must support and encourage participants to reflect upon the learning experience and apply it to practice.

We offer training provider’s education and support in developing their optometry training courses so that they can deliver high quality optometric education themselves or have others deliver on their behalf.

Course attendee complaints process

Eye on CPD has a process for investigating complaints about courses or events that do not comply with accreditation criteria with respect to educational quality or process. The following is a summary of how complaints can be made, are assessed and the processes involved.

Submission of Complaints

  • Complaints can be made by an optometrists who participates in an accredited activity.

  • Complaints must be submitted in writing to Eye on CPD within 1 month of the activity prompting the complaint.

  • Complaints can refer to a course and/or educational sessions within an event.

  • To trigger a review the complaint must specify how the training provider was non-compliant with accreditation standards.

  • Complaints must include contact information of the person making the complaint; this information will be kept confidential.

Complaint Review

  • When received Eye on CPD will acknowledge receipt of the complaint.

  • Eye on CPD will determine whether any complaint is worthy of investigation and if additional information is required for more extensive review.

Investigation Due Diligence and Review

  • Eye on CPD will contact the training provider requesting copies of all course and event attendee evaluations, and attendee list with contact information.

Investigation Findings and Notice

  • The Instructor and/or Administrator/Provider may be found in compliance or not in compliance for the activity reviewed.

  • Notice will be sent to the Instructor and/or Administrator/Provider with an explanation.

  • Should the Administrator/Provider and/or instructor be found not in compliance, COPE may require the Instructor or Administrator/Provider to submit documentation of corrective action within thirty days of receipt of the notice, or rescind the Instructor or Administrator/Provider’s ability to produce COPE courses and events.

Investigation Outcomes

  • If the Provider does not respond within the designated timeframe, their ability to present Eye on CPD accredited courses and events may be suspended pending a response.  

  • Documentation of investigations and findings will be maintained in the Eye on CPD office and made available to the OBA's CPD committee and considered should there be additional complaints or future investigations.

  • Notice will be sent to the Provider within 10 days of any decision to be made at any time during this process to suspend their ability to present Eye on CPD Accredited activities.

  • Eye on CPD reserves the right to provide some information about the Investigation Process to the Optometry Board of Australia which may include, but is not limited to, the facts and circumstances involved in the complaint and investigation, the name of the Provider involved the names of the commercial supporters and the findings.

Repeated Investigations

  • After three complaints Eye on CPD may suspend the training provider in presenting accredited optometry education.

  • First Infraction: Eye on CPD will ask the Provider and/or Instructor to submit written documentation of corrective action to remediate the issue. Eye on CPD informs them that an On-Site Reviewer will be sent to the next activity at COPE’s expense to verify compliance. The reviewer will report back one of three decisions: no violation, minor violation, or significant violation.

  • Second Infraction: COPE will ask the Provider and/or Instructor to submit written documentation of corrective action to remediate the issue. Eye on CPD informs them that an On-Site Reviewer will be sent to the next activity at the Administrator/Provider’s expense to verify compliance. The reviewer will report back one of three decisions: no violation, minor violation, or significant violation.

  • Third Infraction: Possible suspension of privileges by Eye on CPD.

Appeal Process

  • If a training provider disagrees with the findings of any Eye on CPD review process you may appeal the decision in writing. You should include information on why you feel you should be able to continue providing accredited optometry education. This information will be forwarded to the Optometry Board of Australia continuing professional development sub-committee.
