Optometry South Australia’s young optometry hub has held its first social and CPD meeting.

The Young Optometry South Australia (YOSA) event on 20 April hosted Canberra optometrist Joanne Thomas, who gave a presentation titled ‘Dealing with the crocodile in the room: examining children with confidence.’

Ms Thomas’s presentation included details of the norms of children’s vision and how to provide a structured program of eye exercises to remediate simple developmental problems.

Optometry South Australia board member and YOSA co-ordinator Luke Higgins said 11 early career optometrists attended the event.

‘The evening was educational and really enjoyable,’ Mr Higgins said. ‘All attendees commented on how useful the discussion was for providing practical tips to improve the examination of the "crocodiles in the room".

‘It was fantastic to mix with other young optometrists and hear their thoughts on issues and topics within the sector that interest them,’ he said.

‘It was also great to see throughout the discussions how passionate the optometrists are for their profession; there is a great group of young optometrists in South Australia.’

YOSA will meet on the third Wednesday of every month for a combined social and educational gathering.
