Young Optometrists NSW (YO NSW) has welcomed four new executive committee members this year.
Behzad Ghafourian has the role of treasurer, Wilson Luu is the publications officer, Angelica Ly is the education officer and Theresa Bui is the social officer.
YO NSW chairperson Carina Trinh says the four new committee members are an ‘excellent bunch’.
‘We are so privileged to have such enthusiastic and passionate optometrists joining the YO team,’ she said.
All are graduates of the UNSW School of Optometry and Vision Science.
Behzad graduated in 2013 and is employed in an independent practice in northern Sydney. He is looking forward to getting involved in advocacy and networking, particularly by engaging with other primary care professionals such as pharmacists and GPs. He believes young optometrists are in a unique position to shape the future of the profession, while expanding their role as primary care providers.
Wilson completed his degree in 2015. He is interested in ocular diseases and behavioural optometry. In his role as publications officer, Wilson hopes to build closer relationships between young optometrists and health-care practitioners in other fields, such as vision scientists and GPs, to provide a holistic approach to patient care. He is working in a regional NSW practice.
Angelica works at the Centre for Eye Health one day a week, where she has been employed since 2011. She is also employed in clinical research, and undergraduate and postgraduate teaching initiatives. Angelica is dedicated to education and hopes to help bridge the gap between clinical research and clinical practice. She is completing a PhD focused on macular degeneration at the UNSW School of Optometry and Vision Science, having graduated in 2008.
Theresa is responsible for organising events targeted to the interests and needs of young optometrists. She is dedicated to facilitating networking opportunities for members and hopes to strengthen the profession by connecting with other enthusiastic young optometrists. Theresa works in a corporate practice in Sydney’s south-west, where she is a Deakin Clinical Residential Placement Supervisor. She graduated in 2012.
