CEOs and managers of Optometry Australia and the state Divisions
Welcome to all optometry students. You are on your way to entering one of the most interesting and rewarding health-care professions. We invite you to be involved with Optometry Australia, your peak professional membership body for optometrists.
Optometry Australia is a not-for-profit organisation comprising six state Divisions and a National Office. Each Division, along with the National Office, has a governing board made up of members of the profession—your colleagues. The organisation has been supporting the Australian optometry profession for over 100 years.
We all work together toward a common goal. We believe all Australians deserve the best in primary eye health and vision care, and that optometrists are vital in delivering better eye health outcomes for the Australian community. We believe the interests of individual optometrists are best served by a strong and progressive profession, with a representative organisation that actively leads, engages and promotes on behalf of all professionals.
Your membership supports the work that Optometry Australia does in actively strengthening and promoting the profession of optometry. Everything that we do is focused on creating a strong and progressive profession that is meeting the eye health and vision care needs of the Australian community.
Once you graduate and become a full member of a Division of Optometry Australia, you will automatically receive comprehensive professional indemnity insurance and access to a select suite of products and services.
As part of your membership, we also provide general workplace and industrial relations advice to members, as well as independent advice on Medicare and Veterans’ Affairs billing practices, medico-legal issues, health insurance providers and other professional matters.
Guidance for you
We have produced Clinical Guidelines covering many topics, to assist our members in their optometric practice.
Our Practice Notes offer helpful advice and tips on business, billing, ergonomics, employment and many other matters.
It can be concerning for optometrists when the Optometry Board of Australia conducts an audit or Medicare Australia queries an irregularity. At times like these, it is good to know that you can rely on Optometry Australia for assistance.
A vital role of Optometry Australia is to represent optometry to government and other policy and decision makers.
Optometry Australia works closely with regulatory bodies that impact your practice of optometry. We advocate and work closely with the Optometry Board of Australia, and Medicare Australia, for the benefit of our profession. We also meet regularly with the Department of Health to ensure it understands and builds policies, fully aware of the profession’s capabilities.
We work with the commonwealth, state and territory governments to ensure that optometric services are readily accessible across the community, and that practices are sustainable, with adequate government rebates for the services the profession provides.
Through regular dealings with government, the regulatory board and stakeholders, the organisation maintains and strengthens the profession’s position in the delivery of eye care.
The Optometry Australia website records more than 67,960 unique visits each month, serving as an important source of information for optometrists and related stakeholders, optometry students and the public.
The website contains a wealth of resources designed to help optometrists in day to day practice, as well as in areas like marketing and promotions. These are especially useful for new graduates as they join the workforce. We invite you to browse.
Importantly the Find an Optometrist function is used by thousands of consumers searching for optometry services. All members are automatically entitled to have their services listed within this comprehensive consumer database.
